Why T1 is Vastly Superior to DSL & Cable Internet

As a telecom professional for more than 20 years, I have seen the advances and growth in the industry, as well as some of the cutting edge technologies and products to hit the market. But one thing seems to unfortunately remain constant, which is the influx of bad, misleading, and downright inaccurate information regarding telecommunications and the advantages of various technologies to achieve a goal.

First of all, you need to use a reliable provider. This doesn't necessarily mean a "household brand name", and in some cases, definitely does not mean that. But you want to use a carrier whose core business is telecommunications; that is their focus and core market, and they own the networks. Buying something from a second or third tier carrier who does not own the network means you need to go through them to get problems resolved, and they usually have zero ability to fix the problems themselves, but rather need to contact the people who DO own the network. So if you already know that your network is on AT&T or Qwest but you bought your circuit from Billy Bob's, you cannot call AT&T or Qwest directly, because you are not the owner of that circuit; Billy Bob is and is the only one who can log a trouble ticket for your circuit.

You also need to understand that you can choose virtually any carrier on the planet. Just because your local phone company is AT&T or Verizon does not at all mean that they are your only choices for a T1 line. In fact, they are likely your most expensive options.

T1 lines are available just about anywhere, but like real estate, it is location, location, location. The price is highly dependent on the distance of the installation site to the nearest POP (Point Of Presence) of the carrier's distribution facility. As such, the pricing in more metropolitan areas is much better, but even so, a T1 can be had in Mosquito Junction Texas or Podunk Kansas. There is nothing wrong with Mosquito Junction or Podunk, they are lovely communities, but the law of supply and demand prevails, and the demand is just not there to bring the prices down to the same level as metro areas.

A T1 line is certainly not applicable to residential use or home office use in 99.9% of cases.

So what's wrong with DSL and cable? Outside of blatant misleadings and untruths in their advertising you mean? Many things, especially for the business user. Neither DSL nor cable have any kind of uptime guarantee, whereas T1 has a 99.99% uptime guarantee that you get in writing with your contract. And talk about misleading - did you realize that you will likely never see the "6 MB" speed advertised by DSL and cable? That is because you are on a SHARED circuit segment, and you are sharing that circuit segment with 50-100 other businesses and residences in your area, even with "business class" service. That means that only if those 50-100 other businesses and residences are logged off do you even have a theoretical chance of seeing 6 MB speed.

Oh, and that advertised speed is only DOWN. Your UP speed (the speed at which you send data TO the Internet) is typically only about twice the speed of dialup. But they don't tell you that, which in my opinion toes the line of "truth in advertising".

Bandwidth availability? With DSL and cable, you have NONE. If you are able to send or receive ONE character per month to the Internet, your carrier is meeting the terms of their service agreement, which usually says something like "best efforts", and if one character is the best they can do, then that's what you get. The fact that you are seeing decent speeds TODAY has zero bearing on what you might see tomorrow, since these circuits are designed to be oversubscribed, and the only way they can achieve the price points that they do is via over-subscription. You could also be down for a week or more, while they are "working on it" and you have no recourse.

What about FIOS I am frequently asked? FIOS is basically cable with a thyroid condition and has all the inherent disadvantages of cable.

Now let's look at T1, which is delivered very differently from DSL and cable. You have a 99.99% uptime guarantee, and you also have a guarantee of bandwidth availability that is 24x7. You have a DEDICATED circuit, not a shared circuit. I would put a 1.5mb T1 on a dedicated circuit up against a 6 mb DSL on a shared circuit any day of the week and I would win. And you have guaranteed response time if a problem occurs, where you have 24x7 access to the technical support desk in case of a problem.

Use a first or top tier carrier that owns their network. Although you may get a lower price from a second or third tier carrier, you will pay for it in service, in billing inaccuracies, and other problems. There is one well known second tier carrier who installed a "T1" line for a customer, but that customer, looking at it carefully, discovered they had actually installed a DSL circuit. First and top tier carriers cannot afford to play that kind of game.

If you are betting your business's success in large part on the stability of your Internet connection, why gamble with fire by choosing a technology such as DSL or cable that is "iffy" at best with zero guarantees? Do you provide your employees with birch bark and charcoal to save money, or pads and pens? The latter of course because it is more productive for them. The same analogy can be applied to DSL or cable versus T1. Yes a T1 line costs more, but your business operations and productivity will experience great gains, you will have an order of magnitude more reliability, and you will also have an upgrade path as your business grows that typically cannot even be met with DSL or cable.

Confrontational - All Caps Emails Bring Hasty Consequences, Be Nice

ALL CAPS! Sheesh. I got in trouble in an online class for typing a word in all caps, because I was being confrontational in making a point. Uh hum, guess it's okay to be stupid, but commenting on that stupidity in all caps is wrong?

I'm with whoever said they'd fire the person who wasn't filling out the forms right. But, they didn't ask me. In a recent legal battle a woman fired for using all caps, bold and red to emphasize her emails won her job back, along with a pay off when the courts said she didn't deserve to be fired.

Although, writing in ALL CAPS can be annoyingly difficult to read. Emphasizing words with caps, bold and color should be acceptable though. It's like typos - read on through and get over it. I didn't mean to say the sky was gay, instead of gray. However, either word works. My gray skies are always happy.

So, what are the limits with email communication, and should we be following email guidelines to help our readers understand the intent of an email. Business communications have changed over the years. I remember my first office position, receiving a memo from the boss, "Meeting cancelled. Office party, 2 PM, my study, be on time."

Since the meeting mentioned had been a meeting for the same day, I showed up on the same day at 2 PM for the party at the Boss' Study. Expecting a party and hearing happy noises from inside, I didn't bother to listen a moment to the noises or knock, I just opened the door (after all it was an office). Happy noises behind the closed door weren't of the business variety and I closed the door really fast.

* Explain yourself completely (your reader can't read your mind).

5 Ways to Improve Downloading on Dial-up

Dial-up has considerably less bandwidth (uploading and downloading capacity) than broadband. Noise and static on the phone lines could cause a drop the connection without warning. Radio Wave Propagation Models Used in RF Coverage Analysis

Radio wave propagation can be categorized as LOS (Line Of Sight) and non-LOS modes. LOS is direct point-to-point propagation with no obstructions in between. Non-LOS is indirect propagation in the absence of LOS path which consists of diffraction, reflection and scattering. In the HF band (3 - 30 MHz), propagation is primarily using sky wave for long distance communications. VHF and UHF (30 MHz - 3 GHz) waves travel by LOS and ground bounce propagation. The SHF (3 to 30 GHz) wave uses strictly LOS propagation.

The goal of propagation modeling is to determine the probability of satisfactory performance of a wireless system that depends on radio wave propagation. For RF systems planning, the modeling of propagation is for the purpose of RF coverage analysis. This analysis uses the propagation model and terrain data to predict the RF coverage area of a transmitter, the received signal strength at the end of a wireless link, the path loss from the transmitter to a distance receiver, the antenna tilt angle of the transmitter, the minimum antenna height to establish Line of Sight communication path and channel impairment such as delay spread due to multi-path fading.

Propagation models for different applications, environments and terrains had been developed by the US government, private organizations and standard body such as International Telecommunications Union (ITU). These models are based on large amount of empirical data collected for the purpose of characterizing propagation for that application. Since propagation models are created using statistical methods, no single model will exactly fit any particular application. It is a good idea to employ two or more independent models and use the results as bounds on the expected performance. The following are a list of most commonly used near-earth propagation models.

Longley-Rice
The Longley-Rice model predicts long term median transmission loss over irregular terrain. It is designed for frequency from 20 MHz to 20 GHz and path length from 1 to 2000 Km. The model accounts for terrain, climate, subsoil conditions and ground curvature. Longley-Rice model has two modes, point-to-point and area. The point-to-point mode uses detail terrain data and characteristics to predict path loss, whereas the area mode uses general information about the terrain characteristics to predict path loss.

Okumura
The Okumura model is based on the measurements made in Tokyo in 1960, between 200 to 1920 MHz. The measured values are used to determine the median field strength and numerous correction factors. The correction factors include adjustment to the degree of urbanization, terrain roughness, base station antenna height, mobile antenna height and localized obstruction. The Okumura model is especially applicable in urban area for general coverage calculation where numerous obstructions and buildings exist.

Cost 231
The Cost 231 Model, also called the Hata model PCS extension, is used in most commercial RF planning tools for mobile telephony. The coverage of the Cost 231 model is frequency between 1500 to 2000 MHz, transmitter effective antenna height between 30 to 200 m, receiver effective antenna height between 1 to 10 m and link distance from 1 to 20 km. The Cost 231 model is restricted to application where the base station antenna is above adjacent roof tops.

Egli
The Egli model is a simplified model based on empirical match of measured data to mathematical formula. Its ease of implementation makes it a popular choice for use in the first analysis. It assumes gentle rolling hill height of approximately 50 feet and no terrain elevation data between the transmitter and receiver is needed for the model. The median path loss is adjusted for the height of transmit and receive antenna above ground. The model consists of a single equation for the propagation loss.

ITU
ITU terrain model is based on diffraction theory that provides a method to predict median path loss. The model predicts path loss as a function of the height of path blockage and the first Fresnel zone for the transmission link. The model is ideal for modeling line-of-sight link in any terrain and is good for any frequency and path length. The model accounts for obstructions in the middle of the communication link, hence it is suitable to be used both inside cities and open fields. The model is considered valid for losses above 15 dB.
